Top Albums of 2016
2016 was a dumpster fire of a year. They're probably all dumpster fire years but this one seemed really shitty. The never-ending bummer of an election. Many idols transitioning from human to art. This year just seems so much worse. Music can always heal however awful you feel.
This seems apropriate for the year
1. Sunflower Bean - Human Ceremony
A blast of Daydream Nation
2. The I Don't Cares - Wild Stab
Two of my favorite people Julianna Hatfield and Paul Westerberg adding some fire to year
3. Angel Olsen - My Woman
The haunting voice and guitar on Woman may be the high point of the year
4. Haley Bonar - Impossible Dream
I first saw her play at small smokey club in Berlin in November of 2014. A nice light touch of power pop to make you forget it was 2016
5. Bob Mould - Patch the Sky
6. Dinosaur Jr. - Give a Glimpse of What You are Not
From the land of Marshall stacks comes the most unassuming guitar god.
7. Radiohead - A Moon Shaped Pool
8. Bleached - Welcome to the Worms
9. Leonard Cohen - You Want it Darker
The dice were certainly loaded and everyone knew it. We all living in a Leonard Cohen afterworld
10. Iggy Pop - Post Pop Depression
"I've got nothing but my name" A man to be reckoned with. A pleasure to see live with Queens of the Stone Age backing him up
10. David Bowie - Blackstar (tie. Plus I don't want to renumber the whole thing)
11. The Oh Sees - A Weird Exits
12. Ty Segal - Emotional Mugger
13. Wussy - Forever Things
14. Honeyblood - Babes Never Die
15. Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds - Skeleton Tree
you can feel the pain drip from this album
16. Savages - Adore Life
17. RNDM - Ghost Riding
18. The Kills - Ash and Ice
19. Yuck - Stranger Things
20. Violent Femmes - We Can Do Anything

Top 50 Albums of 2013
Reverse Shark Attack
It's been a banner year for San Francisco Music. Which is reflected in the top 50. Here is my top 50 albums for the year.
1. Mikal Cronin MCII Great San Francisco garage rock with a heart of power pop music. A break out talent on his way. 2. Ty Segall Sleeper In a uncharacteristic year for Ty, only one album and a couple of side projects, he still managed to maintain his garage savant moniker. This is a rocking album made largely on acoustic guitars. 3. Sound City Players (David Grohl) Reel to Reel Foo Fighters frontman David Grohl's labor of love to analog music. A rockin album with guest stars Lee Ving, Stevie Nicks,Josh Homme, Trent Reznor and someone named McCartney. 4. Joseph Arthur Ballad of Boogie Christ Prolific Brooklynite Joseph Arthur followed my last years favorite album and favorite side project with another great album. 5. Kelley Stoltz Double Exposure Pure Pop goodness from San Francisco rocker and producer. Yes, My Vinyl copy is still in it's original wrapping. 6. Queens of the Stone Age ...Like Clockwork Josh Homme returns from the dead (litterly) to produce his most grown up album. From working with Dave Grohl again to following Tom Waits at Bridge School Josh has had a banner year. 7. Kurt Vile Walking on a Pretty Daze The album title explains the feeling you have walking around listening to this blissful album of guitar. 8. Eleanor Friedberger Personal Record A light wonderful hike through the summer time roads of life. 9. Thee Oh Sees Floating Coffin John Dwyer recently annouced at the last show to dig in because this will be the last one for awhile. While that may be so there is still an album coming out next year. 10 Caitlin Rose Stand Ins A beautiful album of music that could be from any era or genre. 11. Pearl Jam Lightning Bolt 12. Chelsea Light Moving Chelsea Light Moving 13. Unknown Mortal Orchestra II 14. Minor Alps Get There 15. Okkervil River Silver Gymnasium 16. Wavves Afraid of Heights 17.
